Introduction to the New Food Safety Standards in NSW Childcare
Early Learning and Childcare services have always been the cornerstone of early childhood development in Australia. They are places where trust is paramount, as parents leave their children in the care of professionals. While aspects like education, physical safety, and emotional wellbeing have always been emphasised, there is another equally significant component that often goes unnoticed – food safety.
With the recent amendments to the Food Safety Standards in NSW childcare, NSW has significantly underscored the importance of ensuring children's services offer not just nutritious, but also safe meals. For services such as out-of-school hours care, this becomes even more vital, as meals form an integral part of their operations.
The Core of the Amendment
Two primary changes have been introduced:
-
Mandatory Onsite Food Safety Supervisors: Children's services, particularly long day care early childhood centres that handle potentially hazardous foods, now need a qualified Food Safety Supervisor onsite. This is an effort to maintain stringent checks on the food's preparation and serving. The supervisor is required to be reasonably available, essentially ensuring that there’s always someone with an eagle eye on the food's safety standards.
-
Comprehensive Training for Educators: The changes don’t stop at just having a supervisor. All educators involved in the food preparation process must undergo food safety and hygiene training. This ensures that every person handling food is well-versed with the best practices.
Delving Deeper: Why is this Change Important?
With the increasing cases of food allergies, sensitivities, and the general need for hygienic food handling, the importance of these amendments becomes even clearer. Children, with their developing immune systems, are particularly susceptible to foodborne illnesses. It only takes a small oversight, like undercooked meat or cross-contamination, to jeopardise their health.
Moreover, for many parents, these childcare services provide the primary meals for their children during weekdays. As such, ensuring these meals are not just nutritious but also safe becomes a shared responsibility between the childcare centre and the parents.
How To Comply
For those in the childcare sector, or even those considering entering it, understanding the specifics of these changes is crucial.
-
Getting Certified: For supervisors, this means completing the NSW Food Authority Food Safety Supervisor training. This training is comprehensive, covering all aspects of food safety specific to children's needs. Two units of competency have been highlighted as pivotal – SITXFSA005, which deals with hygiene practices for food safety, and SITXFSA006, focused on participating in safe food handling practices. *Please note that this is a recent change under new compliance laws 3.2.2A
-
Maintaining Records: Keeping detailed records of training is not just about compliance. It offers parents a sense of assurance and also acts as a reference for staff to ensure they're always updated on the latest best practices.

The Way Forward
While these regulations might seem stringent, they underscore the NSW government’s commitment to child safety. The onus is now on childcare providers to ensure compliance, but it’s a small price to pay for ensuring the wellbeing of the children under their care.
For those interested in becoming certified, the CFT's approved NSW FSS course is an excellent place to start. Not only does it cover the mandated units of competency, but it also provides practical insights into the world of food safety in childcare.
As we navigate this new era of heightened food safety in childcare, collaboration becomes our most significant tool. Whether it’s educators sharing best practices, supervisors maintaining vigilance, or parents providing feedback – we all play a pivotal role. After all, the end goal remains the same: ensuring the health and happiness of our future generation.
